✨“First&Latest“ - Deep Purple✨ Today a new episode of my „First & Last/Latest“ series, where we talk about the development of a band/artist from their very beginnings to their „last/latest“ album. Today I say explicitly „latest“, because I really hope that Purple won’t call it quits after the fabulous record they released this year. :) But, let’s start at the beginning! „Shades Of Deep Purple“ was released back in 1968, with Rod Evans on vocals and Nick Simper on bass. Their sound was more Pop style and fitting to the times back then; with great covers like „Help!“, „Hey Joe“ and „Hush“. But with „Mandrake Root“, this album already included a track that lead to their famous „guitar/keyboard“ battles live. I don’t know which other band underwent so many changes in line ups and style like DP, with all their different eras. But it was with the entrance of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover (Mk II), that they wrote Rock history. Over the years the line up changed, with the Coverdale/Hughes era being one of my faves. Gillan came back in the 80s and left once again, being replaced by Joe Lynn Turner (a great singer, but I see „Slaves & Masters“ more as a Rainbow than Purple album), until he returned for good in the 90s. With „Purpendicular“ a whole new era started - Blackmore was gone, and Steve Morse entered the band. And it was around that time that I really „got into“ Purple, thanks to my dad (biggest Purple fan of all!) - I saw my first Purple shows in 1998, now at 24 DP concerts. So lucky to have seen the late Jon Lord, before he retired from Deep Purple and was replaced by the (of course also fantastic) Don Airey. Fast forward to 2020 - with „Whoosh!“ they released their 21st studio album, and what an album it is - I am beyond impressed, it might by my fave from the Steve Morse era. They have my highest respect for creating such amazing records after so many decades in the music business. And with its last track, „And The Address“, it comes full circle - a cover of the opening track of „Shades“. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that next year things will get better and we will have the chance to see concerts again 🤞. What’s your fave Purple era? 💜 #deeppurple #vinyl
